Silence

She sat on her desk, pensive
Unmoved, unflinching, passive
He waited silently for a response
Hoping, praying, always positive

She wanted to trust, but wouldn’t
At least not yet, as she shouldn’t
He wanted to understand her apathy
But as hard as he tried, he couldn’t

Locked secrets and thrown away keys
Impregnable fort when under siege
What to say to one who walks up
Knock on the door and says please

She was in a castle inside a fort
Surrounded by a garden and a moat
Therein she put on a mask
And expertly played her part

Deep down under she was a kid
Fearing retribution for her deed
How could she lend him that one stick
A mere touch would make her bleed

Why should she tell him anything
Who was he and what did he think
And only way she would let him in
If he was patient, instead of probing?

All she wanted was sunshine
Her sunny attitude, was by design
No thoughts of the dusks gone by
At the very least, she needed some time

With silence, she conveyed all of it
Being a guy he understood none of it
He kept going through many emotions
Hope, despondence, anger and guilt

But one question he didn’t ask
Why, should she take off her mask
She was happy the ways things were
Without that one onerous task
